LiveSOUNDS – American Music
November 1 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pmFree
This Friday evening we feature our annual tradition focused on American Music, including a brief lecture on the topic by longtime Third Street faculty Margaret Mills followed by a rich and varied program of piano music. We open with an original piece titled A Manhattan Scene by our very own Hugh Sam, followed by a piece written by 20th century composer Benjamin Lees performed by Mira Gill. From there we take a step back into an earlier era with a movement from Charles Ives’ Concord Sonata performed by Margaret Mills followed by a much more modern piece by Brooklyn composer David Drucker performed by Nnenna Ogwo. The centerpiece of our program are two movements from Grammy winning composer Joan Tower, featuring a sharp contrast of atmospheric and dense textures. The final two performers will be Alexander Wu, performing Two Chinese Bagatelles by Chinese-American composer Chen Yi and a piece by New York-based composer Thomas Addison, and critically acclaimed pianist Adam Tendler, who will perform Three Short pieces from Meredith Monk, a multifaceted recognized as one of the most unique and influential artists of our time.
